Tooth Extraction Q & A

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

Dr. Hassan uses tooth extractions to help her patients protect their smiles. There are a number of cases in which a tooth extraction benefits the patient, including times when:

  • The patient has a crowded mouth
  • The tooth is badly damaged by decay or an injury
  • Infection in a tooth risks spreading in your mouth

Why do people get wisdom tooth extractions?

The human mouth has an extra set of molars, called wisdom teeth, that doesn’t come in until later in life — if at all. The issue is that many people’s mouths don’t have space for this third set of molars. Their eruption can crowd the mouth, shifting straight teeth out of position and misaligning your bite.

In these cases, Dr. Hassan extracts the wisdom teeth to protect the alignment and appearance of your smile. She can remove anywhere between one and all four wisdom teeth as needed based on the space available in your mouth.

What’s the process like for tooth extractions?

You don’t need to dread having your tooth pulled. Dr. Hassan and the dedicated Brookfield Family Dental Art team are committed to providing you with a painless experience. Before your extraction starts, they completely numb the affected area with localized anesthesia.

Then, Dr. Hassan performs either a simple or surgical extraction.

Simple extractions

She uses simple extractions when the tooth has already broken through your gums. Using a device called an elevator, she loosens the tooth. Once loose, she removes it with forceps.

Surgical extractions

If the tooth isn’t visible in the mouth (as is often the case with wisdom teeth), Dr. Hassan makes a small incision in your gums to allow her access to the tooth. She then extracts the tooth.

After your extraction, the Brookfield Family Dental Art Teams ensures you know how to properly care for the area until it heals. Steer clear of straws for a few days, use gauze to staunch any bleeding, and choose soft foods. Generally, over-the-counter pain medication and ice are sufficient to manage any discomfort and swelling.

Your tooth extraction can be a comfortable and easy process. Schedule your appointment at Brookfield Family Dental Art by calling the office or booking online.
